There is a universality that comes with the aftermath of a breakup. Navigating the conflicted aftermath, we find ourselves falling into the pit of breakup clichés. The pints of Ben & Jerry’s, empty chardonnay bottles and Joni Mitchell tracks rapidly become our only comfort. The 'how comes' and 'if onlys' replay themselves over and over again in our minds until the story we tell ourselves becomes reality. Our routine is so universal, in fact, that it becomes almost laughably trivial. The romantic comedy has become a guilty pleasure to watch not because it is ill-conceived, but perhaps because we see in it an embarrassing reflection of ourselves. Our trail of exes have become strangers who know all of our secrets and leave us asking “what if?
